Local Government – What’s Your Role?
A workshop series offered by the Greater Waynesboro Chamber of Commerce

Local governments – townships, boroughs and school districts – impact our lives in many ways. They levy taxes, guide land use and development, educate our children and provide basic services like roads, water and sewer. They improve our quality of life and build a sense of community with parks and recreation, downtown revitalization, cultural and historical resources.

But who is ‘they’? It’s your friends and neighbors and it could be you! There are many ways to become involved in local government as an informed citizen, a volunteer, an appointed official serving on a board or commission, or as an elected official participating in the governance of your municipality. Getting started means learning about local government – how it works, what it can and cannot do, and what issues can be addressed at the local level.

The Greater Waynesboro Chamber of Commerce is offering a series of workshops in collaboration with Penn State Extension to help you decide what role you’d like to play in your local government. You can become better informed about state level elections occurring in 2018, and prepare for municipal elections in 2019.

This workshop explores appointed and elected offices. We’ll look at local offices that will be on the ballot in 2019 and what you can expect from each. We hope this workshop will encourage some Chamber members to seek appointed or elected office.
